We are thrilled to announce that last week IVN venture Duroos Learning Center was awarded this year’s prestigious Echoing Green* 2015 Global Fellowship.

duroos aug 2012-017Frustrated by the poor standard of education in the Arab sector, 7 years ago Fadi Elobra established the Duroos Learning Center with the help of IVN.  Understanding their potential, Duroos was selected to join IVN’s portfolio in 2009 as part of the IVN Economic Reconstructive Initiative. Since that time, IVN has nurtured and supported Duroos. Today, Duroos is part of IVN’s Social Venture Program – a model of mentoring, capacity building and financing of high-potential social businesses.

Located in the southern town of Rahat, the Duroos Learning Center provides psychometric (equivalent to SAT’s) preparatory courses in Arabic for high school students and post-high school young adults in the Bedouin and Arab society. Duroos employs only local residents and has become vital to the community of Rahat. As a result if its success, additional branches were opened in the south and north of Israel.

As a result of their impact and promising future, Duroos was one of the 52 social enterprises, of the 3,500 applicants, awarded this year’s prestigious Echoing Green 2015 Global Fellowship. IVN is proud to have been among the recommenders for this award. The Echoing Green’s Fellowship Programs support emerging leaders working to bring about positive social change. In addition to the $90,000 grant for two years, Duroos will receive mentoring, participate in leadership development gatherings and have access the powerful network of Echoing Green Fellows, partners, and friends.

Within the framework of IVN’s Social Venture Program, Duroos is being financed by IVN and the Jewish Community Federation of San Francisco.

We are grateful to IVN mentor Asa Albag and IVN professional Hedva Fensterheim, who continue to provide ongoing guidance and support.
